 On December 10 of each year, Human Rights Day is observed to commemorate the 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly. This day promotes and safeguards all people's fundamental rights and freedoms worldwide. Human Rights Day's 2025 theme is "Our Everyday Essentials," which emphasizes the significance of human rights in everyday life.

 The official theme for Human Rights Day 2025 is “Holocaust Remembrance for Dignity and Human Rights".  This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the Holocaust, when the cruel Adolf Hitler-led German Nazis massacred Jews at their behest. The day calls for reflection on the consequences of hatred and discrimination between people.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations on December 10, 1948, laying the groundwork for global rights protection. The day attains great importance as many human rights bodies organise programs, discussion forums and several activities to educate, engage and advocate for the rights inherent to all individuals.

 On this day, the discussion revolves around human rights issues and the need for a fair, just and inclusive world that we all have a responsibility towards.  The aim is to promote global equality, justice and human dignity.

 At a time when humanity continues to suffer amid geopolitical tension between nations, animosity among communities and hateful crimes, the Human Rights Day calls for the restoration of law, justice, peace, love and empathy

The creation of Human Rights Day is rooted in the aftermath of World War II.  As the world grew aware of the fatal consequences of war, the United Nations was formed.

 The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was drafted by the United Nations and is a sign that humanity is working together to protect the rights and freedoms that each person deserves. Representatives from diverse legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world played an active role in the formal adoption of the document.

 It was the first time the fundamental human rights were pledged to be universally protected by UN members and their national representatives.

 More than 60 instruments related to human rights have been influenced by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its principles, despite the fact that it is not a treaty that is legally binding. The annual observance of the Human Rights Day was established by the United Nations back in 1950.
